Employ Community Service Projects Across the Curriculum

Jim Hill High School

Problem Summary

Jim Hill High School’s mission encompasses a component related to community service, but rarely gives back to community in a whole school venture. The organization is responsive to our current academic status; however, we do not take the responsibility of contributing to the community we live in.
Background of Organization
Jim Hill High School is located in the Jackson Public School District which is the second largest school district in Jackson, Mississippi. The school founder, James Hill, was a former Mississippi slave who became one of the first three blacks elected to state office as Secretary of State. Jim Hill was first established as an elementary school, then a junior high school, and is now a high school with more than 1,300 students enrolled. As an urban high school, Jim Hill is also the only International Baccalaureate School in Mississippi.
According to the school’s academic profile listed on their website, www.jackson.k12.ms.us, the racial demographic is broken down at 97.54 Black, 1.66% White, .60% Hispanic, .18% Asian, and .02% Native American. The graduation rate is 64.2% with 31% of the schools listed as academic watch and 35% label successful.
Stakeholders and Decision-Makers
Though the community will be the direct entity that will be affected by the plan, the students will hopefully also be affected through their sense of giving and generosity. Students will have the opportunity to become responsible to the world around them and realize they can make a difference to their community.
Our principal, Bobby D. Brown, and assistant principal, Sam Kursar, will be the key personnel in this intervention.
